The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior on the island of Ioannina Lake was probably founded in the mid-17th century, but was destroyed during the siege of Ali Pasha of Ioannina in 1820-1822. Abbot Avvakum erected in 1850 a new katholikon, which is a three-aisled domed basilica with a narthex to the west and a loggia to the south. The katholikon was frescoed in 1851 by the painter Anthimos, a monk from Mount Athos with a very special western style of painting. At the same time, the remarkable wooden temple of the church was constructed, which features icons of the same painter. In 1872, the Seminary building next door was constructed, which operated until 1922.
