The original church of Agia Marina was built after the expulsion of Christians from the Castle in 1611, and certainly existed in 1640. This church was completely renovated in 1791 and was the most beautiful of the city at that time, but was partially destroyed during the siege of Ali Pasha of Ioannina in 1820-1822 and was finally burned by bandits in 1829. In 1852 the present church was erected with a donation from the benefactor Nikolaos Zosimas. It is a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica with a dome and a matroneum in the west side. The works were completed in 1856 with the loggia and in 1862-1863 with the iconostasis. In 1857, a chapel of Neomartyr John of Ioannina was erected in the courtyard of the church, whose house was very close to the church.
